Tapestry Techniques

Sylvia Feinstein – Tapestry Techniques

The art of contemporary tapestry begins with a design on paper, architectural in nature and connected to the future concept of transferring the design onto another medium – that of the loom. Every piece is conceived around ideas of authenticity, history and timelessness.

Each part of the design is created in great detail keeping in mind the particular colors that will be blended as well as the type of fiber and weave that will bring the design to life as a full size tapestry.

The planning process is a methodical progression which moves from the creative design to a fully formed maquette with details in place. Nothing is left to improvisation; every centimeter of the final weaving is perfectly planned. Eventually an enlargement will be made in the final size of the planned tapestry and the weaving process can begin.

All the tapestries are made by hand, woven on vertical looms, using the French technique of Gobelin. This traditional method, unique to the finest tapestries, enables the weaver a more perfect control and fidelity of the design and color over the tapestry.

The weaving is flat, allowing a final product of extremely light weight. Only the highest quality natural fibers, wool, cotton and silk are used in the creation of the tapestries. Using the most luxurious natural materials available enables the pieces to remain in perfect condition for generations.

The resulting contemporary tapestries are appropriate for domestic or commercial interiors, are all original designs, signed and documented by the artist.  Commissions with a particular space or occasion in mind offer a unique opportunity to collaborate in the creative process and are welcomed.

“Throughout this unique process I strive to ensure that the final work will reflect the skill and expertise that are required in order to produce an artwork which truly inspires.”
