Planetarium

Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades or loosen Orion’s belt? Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons or lead out the Great Bear with its cubs?    (Job 38:31-32)

SERIES: SCIENCE AND THE BIBLE

TITLE: Planetarium

SIZE: 1.65m x 2.0m (65in x 79in)

While planetary systems are only possible under general conditions of equilibrium, many of the processes that take place involve spontaneous ruptures, chaos, and violent transitions to new equilibria. The Bible asserts our frailty in the face of such celestial power. However, my tapestry projects the view that human life can be seen as a fragile reflection of the incredible cosmic drama. We experience our own transitions, often with as little control here on earth as we have over the heavens above. The tapestry’s colors – some subdued, some warm – and its abstract figures revolve like the planets around the sun, or like human beings in a dance, all seeking balance.
